Butterfly Specimen

“Anthony” the butterfly

Scientific name: Heliconius melpomene cythera
Geographic location: South America
Artist: Jessa Huebing-Reitinger
Medium: Pastel on Wallis grit paper 22” x 38” 2003
Performance venue: The Kansas City Zoo, Kansas City, MO. USA

“Anthony” is known to come from South America and the specimen was provided by the Kansas State Insect Zoo. Butterflies go through 4 stages in their life cycle and make some miraculous changes during the process. The stages are; egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. The most astonishing transformation is hidden within the chrysalis as the once before caterpillar breaks down into a soup like mush. Then, over a period of 10 to 14 days (unless wintering over) the mush will metamorphosis into a completely different form, the butterfly.

“Anthony” is named after James’s father, Thomas Anthony Reitinger. Project InSECT wouldn’t have been possible without Mr. and Mrs. Reitinger's financial contributions. This is our way to say thank you, and thus believing is seeing.
