Insect Butterfly Speciman Photo

“Bessie” the butterfly

Scientific name: unknown
Geographic location: South America
Artist: Jessa Huebing-Reitinger
Medium: Pastel on Wallis grit paper 24” x 30” 2003
Created for: Ribbons of Pink Breast Cancer Benefit Auction 2003
Collection of: Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Dockhorn

Bessie is known to come from South America and was provided by the Kansas State Entomology Department. The specimen was selected for a special pastel portrait that would in turn become a donated gift to the Ribbons of Pink annual benefit known as Ribbons and Racquets in Overland Park, Kansas. This organization provides funding and emotional support for breast cancer patients, families, and survivors. Jessa chose a butterfly for the special event because they symbolize rebirth and renewal.

The name Bessie came from Jessa’s Great Grandmother, Bess Huebing, whom was also an artist and painter. Jessa was inspired by her works as a child and is still today.
