On a gentle fall day near a farm in Wichita, Kansas, a mother praying mantis laid her egg case called an ootheca on a low branch of an old oak tree.

The praying mantis eggs withstood the bitter wind and snow of the long cold winter in the comfortable hard foam ootheca.

Finally spring had come, and first born out of the ootheca came a teeny-tiny mantis named Mildred with 113 of her brothers and sisters. Some of whom she ate. Mildred thought whooo…..me?
